Could Avonte Maddox Return This Season?
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles' defense has struggled as of late, but they could be getting some much-needed reinforcements as the playoffs approach.

Cornerback Avonte Maddox has missed most of the season after suffering a torn pectoral in the second game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings. Originally, it was reported that Maddox would likely be out for the season, but recent news has started to raise the question of whether or not he may be able to return this year.

Former Eagle C.J. Gardner-Johnson also suffered a torn pectoral in Week 2, and has just been medically cleared to return to practice for the Detroit Lions. While the severity of the two players' injuries could be different, Gardner-Johnson's imminent return is a good sign for Philadelphia.

Maddox is still on injured reserve, but has been spotted at practice more and more recently, working out with trainers as he pushes towards a return. With only four weeks remaining in the regular season, it is unlikely that he returns before it ends, but the team has not ruled out a possible return in the playoffs.

His presence at slot cornerback could ease some of the struggles that the secondary and linebackers have dealt with in the passing game. The Eagles have been unable to find a suitable replacement in the slot during his absence.

In six seasons with Philadelphia, Maddox has recorded 246 tackles, 31 passes defended, 13 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles, four interceptions and 3.0 sacks. He has become one of the most reliable slot cornerbacks in the league for the Eagles, and his return from injury could prove to be vital for run at the Super Bowl.
