Cowboys double down on last year's huge bet with latest additions to the organization
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

One of the big things the Dallas Cowboys have done a good job of building the last couple of offseasons is the overhauled version of their analytics department.

Spearheaded by John Park, the team witnessed several big additions in 2023, including former MLB personnel. In 2024, the Cowboys are doubling down by adding a couple of "Strategic Football Fellows" in Shane Hauck and Piper Hampsch, per ESPN's Seth Walder. Per Walder, the former was a 2024 Big Data Bowl finalist while the latter previously interned with the MLB Milwaukee Brewers and the NHL Chicago Blackhawks.

Since he took ahold of the team as head coach, McCarthy expressed interest in building a data-driven team to help the Cowboys in overall decision-making but it was a long-winded process after he joined the franchise in the middle of pandemic.

Last year, under the wings of Park, the team grew and this is another step on a process that could help the Cowboys win moving forward. The top NFL teams around the league have heavily leaned into data-driven decision-making, which can range from in-game management to optimal roster construction and much more.

For instance, although we don't know the Cowboys' exact thought process, it's clear they're valuing the running back position differently in 2024 as they let Tony Pollard walk in free agency and appear more than comfortable going into the season with no clear-cut RB1 and instead leaning toward a committee approach.

Additionally, we saw the Cowboys heavily shift toward a passing offense midseason following the team's struggles in San Francisco in last year's Week 5 defeat. These are decisions that fit the overall conclusions that football analytics have brought to the table in recent years.

Hauck and Hampsch will be a part of the growing team that the Cowboys might be leaning more and more on moving forward.
