José Mourinho has savagely replied to Papu Gomez’s comments, where the Monza striker had earlier explained that he had no memories of the Special One, except the fact that he had won the UEFA Europa League final last season against him. Gomez was handed a two-year ban from football two days ago for breaching doping regulations, and the Portuguese coach couldn’t help but take a swipe at the tainted Argentina international.

Mourinho was asked about the former Atalanta forward following Roma’s 1-0 win over Monza.

“Gomez did not play in the Europa League final. I think he did play against Juventus before testing positive on the anti-doping test. But I wouldn’t want to take the same cough syrup as him, otherwise I could get into trouble.”

The 35-year-old tested positive for a prohibited substance – a cough syrup he later claimed to be his son’s – prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar, where he won the gold medal. Sevilla were given the test results back then, but Gomez has only now been informed of his sentence.

Gomez was part of the Sevilla squad that beat Roma in Budapest last campaign, before he secured a move back to Italy with Monza as a free agent.
